In the spring of 2023, Alberta Education announced funding to establish the Southern Alberta Collegiate Institute (SACI). SACI is a partnership between Lethbridge College (LC), Career Transitions, and six (6) regional school divisions, aimed at helping students explore career pathways while increasing capacity in the trades, agriculture, and medical professions.
The renovated Barn will serve as a dedicated facility for secondary students to gain hands-on experience and technical training, similar to the Career and Technology Studies (CTS) spaces found in local high schools and middle schools. SACI will support construction trades—including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical—while also providing space for automotive and culinary training.
As a wood-framed building, achieving the required fire ratings was a key consideration. The majority of the work focused on the interior fit-out, with additional emphasis on maintaining high STC ratings between learning spaces. Exterior scope was limited and included the addition of a new entrance canopy and a second-floor exit stair.
